Welcome to the 2014 – 2015 school year! If you are reading this letter, you are either a student or a parent/guardian for a student who is currently placed in my classroom. My name is Mr. Stevenson, and I teach Accelerated Science and Social Science for the 7th grade. This letter is intended to highlight a few important ideas that are critical to student success in the coming year.
A key part of preparing students for the rigors of High School is to have high standards, and hold them accountable to those standards. This is only possible if everyone is aware of ongoing progress, and if there is clear communication between myself, the students and the parents/guardians. In order to facilitate this communication, I have put the following procedures in place for my classroom in addition to standard quarterly conferences and midterm progress reports:
1. Weekly Progress reports: In order to keep students and parents/guardians informed about ongoing grades and any missing assignments, progress reports will be issued every Thursday, and are due back with a signature Friday. If a student fails to turn in a signed progress report, the parent/guardian will receive an email with a complete progress report for all classes as well as an automated phone call and/or text reminding them to check their student’s current progress.
2. Tweeted news and assignments: I have created a Twitter account (SciSocHomework) in order to tweet updates to the class website, which includes assignments, lesson plans and resources, and upcoming assessments.
3. Class Website: A class website has been created that has copies of all worksheets, rubrics and assignments as well as most reading packets assigned in class. The current address is huffordstevenson.weebly.com.
Study Hall: I am available after school on Wednesdays in order to supervise a study hall and offer tutoring from 3-4 pm. Students who wish to stay for additional work time and help must have a signed slip indicating they have permission to stay and how they will get home. All students must be picked up at the main entrance facing Larkin Avenue.
Late work policy: Any missing work will be accepted up to five school days after the original due date if turned in with the signature of a parent or guardian. Late work will be worth 90% of the full value in Term 1, 80% in Term 2, 70% in Term 3, and 60% in Term 4. Work will not be accepted that is more than 5 school days late.
Discipline Policy: If detentions are issued for minor misbehaviors, they will be served Friday of the current week from 3-4 pm.
Homework: The ability to read on a daily basis, complete assignments on time and study to prepare for upcoming assessments are critical skills for long term success. To encourage the involvement and awareness of Parents and Guardians, it is the policy in my classroom to monitor work completion closely. In the event that an assignment is not turned in on time or an assessment is failed, an automated phone call will be made to the number on file to inform all Parents and Guardians.
I look forward to a great year of working with you to ensure the success of all students!
Thank You,
Mr. Stevenson
