In social studies, we took a little time to study the Preamble again, and listen to the maddeningly memorable song. Remember, for tomorrow you must be able to write the Preamble correctly from memory, and then explain what each part means in modern language. Don't just assume you can do this: test yourself. If you can effectively meet those requirements two separate times tonight without studying immediately in advance (or really for an hour before hand) then you probably know it, and are prepared for the test. If you make mistakes, well...you need to practice more.
To assist with the translation/meaning part, I did update the powerpoint and change the coloring so it prints easier, and I'll load it in the constitution section shortly.
In science, we talked about unsafe food, and how to avoid health hazards from unsafe food. Aside from foods that are just plain old toxic, like certain plants (uncooked cassava, anyone?) one of the primary worries when eating food is the risk of bacterial contamination. This is when there are enough microorganisms growing on a food that they make it into the body in large numbers, and basically can cause an infection serious enough that illness or death can result. Usually, this only happens when the food gets contaminated with something else that already has lots of microorganisms, like manure. It can also happen if food is left out at typical temperatures for too long, and they can multiply to form large populations.
We can cure this in a few ways: wash the outside to remove contaminants, eat it quickly before microorganisms can grow, keep it cold to prevent them from multiplying quickly, or cook the food to kill microorganisms on the surface.
With that said, most human societies can end up with extra food that they need to preserve. If there is no possibility to freeze or chill it until it can be preserved, some other methods should be used.
Tomorrow, all classes will have the opportunity to take some of the skills and strategies we have discussed for doing research on the internet and apply them to find information about the relationship between pH and food safety. In fact, the Complete Answer Response that is due the following day (Thursday the 28) will essentially be a response to that as a prompt: Explain the relationship between Food Safety and pH using the CAR format.
