My afternoon class is a little ahead of the game because of some scheduling weirdness typical for the start of the school year, so we are a bit further. I demonstrated how to create an anthocyanin solution, and the students were invited to develop some ideas of substances we could bring in from home to test to see what the anthocyanin does. This wasn't as simple as just volunteering the name of a thing and tossing it in with the solution...we need to know how we'll prepare it, how much we'll use, anticipate the effects of color, etc. We will start testing those tomorrow as a class and gathering data. Once we've discovered what the anthocyanin does, we'll do some research to figure out how it could be useful to us, and then design a test kit to take advantage of the properties of anthocyanin. (Hint! If you already know, avoid discussing it, and if you are desperate to find out, avoid looking it up. The journey is part of the fun.)
In social studies, we had our first assignment as we read through a handout that gives a brief overview of the circumstances surrounding the creation of the US Constitution, the essentially structure of our government, and the parties that currently operate the three branches. A CAR response (rubric attached below) is due tomorrow for the first response. (The others may be assigned later.)
