This was once the classroom website and blog for Mr. Stevenson's classes at Hufford Junior High. It is now a site to post random questions and to reach Mr. Stevenson if he is needed. Please use actual names, and be respectful.
Okay: I have updated both yesterday's presentation, and added some info into the section headings for the rubric. I'm going to upload those and all the other related files below, and if you click on this post's heading I'll have viewable versions of those docs up as well. I'm hoping my updates to the demonstration presentation will clarify a bit for those of you who are still confused, but in any case there is more than enough information available (here and possibly on youtube for the more self-directed among you) to complete a final presentation product. For the record, your rough draft and final product are intended to be separate products.

Well, if you REALLY CANNOT GET ACCESS TO A 3 DOLLAR CABBAGE...which is actually totally possible...your options are to:

do we need to write anything down for the originality part for the engineering project.

No. IT is not a section on the poster. Instead, it is an evaluation of how creative and self-directed you were in your approach to the problem.

On the engineering project rubric, in the layout section, it says for 4 points, the product can be a poster or presentation. Is the presentation an option?

Yes...you can turn in (email or printed) a PowerPoint, but a poster is preferred.

Hey Mr. Stevenson do we write it in a three section format or just right it down on a regular piece of paper and do we have to record and test a new design at home with testing strips or record what we did in class for the past few days without testing strips?

The mini-poster (three section) format is preferred, since this is the final product. The only requirement is that you try a method to test the pH and then improve that method. Whether you need to test anything at home largely depends on what you accomplished in class.

Do we have to buy a poster or do we just make our final copy off a normal piece of paper?

Tomorrow the final product is due...that is to say, the poster describing what you did. (That said, I'd love to see an example of your kit as well, but it is not technically required.)

So if we tried a method in class and it worked the first time we tried it do we still have to come up with a way to improve it?

I suppose if it worked completely perfectly and could not be improved in any way at all, then your redesign section would just need to say "No changes were necessary or possible to improve this product," but I'm skeptical that any are actually that perfect...

At the very least, everyone could probably improve things like size, amounts of materials used, etc.

For our redesign do we have to write down what we did if it didnt work?

Yes: your redesign is an explanation of how to improve it. It is intended to be a section of the presentation poster, where you explain what was changed after testing. So, the redesign is a part of the final product/poster.

Do we have to redesign a new method or can we use the information when we tested it in class? And do we have to improve it even if it worked the first time?

The redesign is intended to modify and improve the original design. If the original prototype did not work at all, then you can use a different idea, including from class. It should be possible to improve even something that worked by making it smaller, easier to use, etc.

And by poster do u mean on a big poster paper folded into three sections or a regular sized piece of paper folded into three sections ?

No large posters, please. Ideally, it should be bigger than "regular" (8.5x11 inches) paper, because you'll need the room, but no larger than 14X19 inches. The papers I provided in class are ideal, really, but if you use something different it will not negatively affect your grade.

So when i tested tomato juice with anthocyanin and the mystery liquid with anthocyanin in class and it worked I now have to find something with a clear color and same pH because the redness of the tomato juice would affect the method because the mystery liquid is clear and the tomato juice is red?

Hmmm. That's some good thinking, there. I would suggest maybe diluting vinegar with water to get a clear solution with a specific pH. (If you search, you can find directions on how to dilute vinegar online...)

Hmm. Any clear liquid you know the pH of will do, if your just testing to see if your method is accurate. Maybe look up the pH of Sprite or something. Even pure water would do, although it wouldn't be very exciting.

Printer paper is great. You may need to do it on separate pieces and staple them together if you don't have enough room.
